Description

The Small Southern Ring Nebula NGC 3132
The Southern Ring Nebula (NGC 3132) is the beautiful result of the ejection of material from a massive star more than 2000 years ago. And it is also one of the first nebulae observed with the Webb telescope. The star that produced the Southern Ring Nebula was about 500 million years old when it ejected most of its envelope to leave behind a white dwarf about 0.6 solar masses, similar to what will happen to the Sun in 5 billion years. This star lived shorter because it was three times more massive than the Sun. It created clouds of gas that spread from the ejection site. Orsola De Marco (Macquarie University, Sydney) and his collaborators managed to find evidence of the presence of two or three companion stars around the massive star, which would have accelerated its "death" and a fourth that could also have interacted.
This star is not visible in our image because it is too small and unresolved due to its proximity to the very bright central star.

The extended and structured halo of hydrogen that surrounds a central ionized bubble is imbued with spiral structures. These structures were likely shaped by a low-mass companion orbiting the central star at only about 40 to 60 AU (not resolved by Webb). The images also reveal an excess in the mid-infrared at the central star, which is interpreted as a dusty disk, indicating interaction with another closer companion.

This image is a crop of the full field visible in image B.
